What equipment and instruments are used during a hair transplant?

Water temperature and pressure: avoid hot water and high water pressure. Lukewarm water with a gentle stream is the most suitable.
Drying: avoid using a hairdryer or rubbing with a rough towel; where possible, let the hair air-dry or pat it dry gently with a very soft towel.
May I use a sauna or Turkish bath after a hair transplant?
As Armeda, we strictly prohibit the use of saunas, steam baths, very hot showers and environments with high heat and humidity during the first 4 weeks.
In this period the grafts are still very fragile and the combination of heat and moisture can lead to loss of grafts.
Between weeks 4 and 6, if recovery is proceeding without problems, controlled exposure to low heat can be permitted, but only with the clinic’s approval.
Our general protocol is this: the ideal and safe period to use a sauna again lies between the second and third month.
When may I shave or cut my hair after a hair transplant?
As Armeda Clinics, we stress that the timing of shaving and cutting after a hair transplant is very important for the grafts to settle properly and for the scalp to recover fully. Shaving too early can damage the grafts and disrupt the recovery process.
According to the Armeda protocol, the following guidelines apply:
- First 2 to 3 weeks: absolutely no cutting or shaving. The scalp is still sensitive and the grafts are not yet fully fixed in place.
- After 2 to 4 weeks: the crusts have generally disappeared and redness and sensitivity are decreasing. At this stage careful cutting with scissors can be considered, but shaving with clippers or a razor is still not advised.
- 2 to 3 months: most grafts have attached and the scalp has largely recovered; shaving with clippers can usually be permitted in this period, provided it is done carefully.
- 3 to 6 months: the hair roots are stable and the hairs are starting to grow normally; cutting and styling are then possible without restrictions.
Please note: every patient is different and recovers at their own pace. Approval from the clinic or a check-up with the doctor is therefore always necessary before cutting or shaving.
This schedule is intended to protect the transplanted hair roots and to support an optimal final result.
How does the donor area heal after a hair transplant?
According to Armeda Clinics, the donor area is one of the most critical zones of a hair transplant. When this area heals correctly, the aesthetic appearance is preserved and the recovery process is more comfortable. The healing speed of the donor area can vary depending on care discipline and skin structure, but the general healing principles are comparable.
Basic information according to the Armeda protocol:
- In the first 5 to 7 days, micro-crusts form in the donor area; this is a natural part of the healing process.
- Within 7 to 10 days, redness and crust formation largely subside and the area visibly recovers.

Are transplanted hairs permanent?
According to Armeda Clinics, a hair transplant can be a lifelong solution — given the right patient selection, quality donor material, an experienced surgeon and good aftercare. There are nevertheless various factors that influence success and durability.
Important information according to the Armeda protocol:
- The transplanted hair follicles are usually taken from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp. These hairs are genetically resistant to hair loss and retain this property when they are moved. This is why modern transplant techniques can deliver permanent hair.
- In the first 2 to 4 weeks after the procedure, “shock loss” can occur: the transplanted hairs shed temporarily. This is normal; only the hair shaft falls out, while the hair root stays in the skin and becomes active again later.

At Armeda Clinics we regard the first month as one of the most crucial periods in the healing process. During this phase the transplanted grafts will have fixed themselves in place, but the temporary process we call “shock shedding” continues. Hair density can appear reduced during this period; this is completely normal. The hairs that shed are not the hair roots themselves; the roots remain protected beneath the skin.
Crust formation, a pink discolouration and slight sensitivity of the skin largely disappear within the first month. New hair growth is not yet expected; changes in appearance start from the third month.
How does the process go two months after a hair transplant?
The second month is a period in which healing is complete on the surface, but the appearance has not yet changed. In most patients shock shedding occurs between weeks 2 and 8, and during this phase the transplanted area can look thin, uneven or “raw”.

During this period the hairs become noticeably thicker, density increases and the hairline becomes more sharply defined.
This is not yet the final result, however. According to the Armeda protocol, true density and a permanent result are achieved between 9 and 12 months. The fifth month is the middle of the process.
What can I expect six months after a hair transplant?
According to Armeda Clinics, the sixth month is the “first important milestone” after a hair transplant: the grafts have fully taken and new hairs are starting to appear. Patience is nevertheless still needed for the final result. Basic information about the Armeda protocol:
After six months, roughly 50 to 70% of the transplanted hairs have grown; the hair strands are starting to become thicker and longer.

Are the costs of a hair transplant covered by insurance?
According to Armeda Clinics: in most cases — no. A hair transplant is an aesthetic procedure and is therefore generally not covered by standard health insurance. In some specific situations this can be different, however, for example in the case of hair loss caused by an accident, burns or a medical condition; in such cases certain insurers or policies may make an exception.
Important points according to the Armeda protocol:
- If a hair transplant is purely cosmetic → the costs are paid by the patient.
- Only in cases regarded as a “medical necessity” or as reconstructive surgery — such as after trauma, burns or hair loss caused by illness — can an application be submitted to an insurer or a healthcare fund.
- Supplementary policies or additional insurance packages usually do not cover hair transplants either; even comprehensive plans rarely do so.
